Final Reflection

It all come down to this final reflection after all the hard work, laughter and memories. Just 2 weeks ago, I was cursing at how taxing this module is with the workload. It does not even feel like a level 2000 module. However,at the end of it all, looking back, I have learn a couple of things that I would not have learn in other modules. These are skills that I will bring on further in my life.

Here are some :

1) Writing

I got to admit, I started with really horrible writing skills. A sentence that seems alright to me can be full of errors in the eyes of Brad and some of the better writers in the class. However, through the course of blogging, I learn a lot from the comments given by my peers. After sometime, I became more aware of my writings and tried to keep to the 7Cs. I really have to credit my improvement in my writing to my peers particularly my blogging buddies and Brad of course. Thank you all :)

2) Presenting

Through the course, we had countless opportunity to make presentations. My most memorable experience was the impromptu presentation. I did not expect it to be so taxing and the 4hrs of sleep the night before did not help. It is really through that experience that I realized how one can reveal all his flaws when unprepared. I resorted to being candid as I wanted to make myself more relaxed. But Brad was not amused. I can still remember him telling me that in a presentation we cannot be too "Jokey"(did I spell that correctly?) That left me a huge impression. I am now more aware of the different aspect of presenting and how important preparation is to a presentation. This skills that I learn about presenting will be useful to me in future countless presentations that I will be required to do.

3)Interaction

"No man is an island" Interaction is bound to happen everywhere and this module provide lots of it. Being put into different groups all the time to discuss about issues and work on projects, we were given many opportunities to interact with one another. Those were good opportunity to exercise our inter-personal skills. Through the discussion, I learn various ways to bring my points across , while through the projects I learn how to work effectively with others to get things done.

Yan Ling also taught me how patience is essential in interaction. Her patience in resolving conflicts among us is really admirable. Without her patience, we would have waste precious resources in the arguments and often make wrong decisions. I would really like to thank her for it.

This module have been a memorable one with all the new friendship I have forged and all the skills that I have picked up. I would not say that I had a enjoyable time all the time through this course but I am glad I have taken it.

Thank you Brad !

  1. Hi Boss (haha!),

I realised I may not have commented here before, even though I would have read previous blogposts. :)

Thus it compels me here to make the first post! With some intention of damage control because I am really not as patient as you make it out to be. Well, I am honoured if you think so, but I believe I gained more working with this special project group.

Looking through your perspectives as a leader of the group, it has really been tough getting everyone together as a team. I remember the times where no doubt the going was tough, you could still crack jokes to liven the atmosphere. (Think the Asr** spell!) And that's the kind of energy that defines a leader, I'd say. Well, as a team member, I really value your forthright nature and critical insights in analyzing data. These have certainly brought our group far from where we had started off. :) The learning journey was long but definitely worthwhile.

Our group has explored the YIH student lounge, balcony, RH library and lower lounge. Those days are finally over! :D Unbelievably. Here's to ENG and friendship! :D All the best in your future endeavours.

    Cheers, Yanling

  2. Hi Xing Quan!

It is most heartening to see that you've taken all corrections and criticisms in you stride. Your wonderful attitude to constantly improve and achieve is truly admirable.

Thanks for the insightful reflection on the course, I enjoyed reading it from your perspective. No man is an island indeed. We're all going to need the skills we've been taught here. Thank goodness for the opportunity to hone them in such a hands-on, yet non-threatening setting.

I particularly liked your little tribute to Yanling. (: It shows how you really appreciate people, and are always open to learn from them.

May your thirst for knowledge never die! All the best for the final exams (:

  3. Hi Yan Ling,

Don't call me boss again! Haha! But I am really humbled by your words. I am not as great as you have said. Even if I am, it is due to the great teamates that I have.

I can really be insensitive sometimes. Even in my CCA, I am told by my people that I am sometimes too direct. I guess this is one area of communication that I have to work on.

I am really happy that I got to work with you. Your patience and smile can make anyone's day. Thanks so much once again.

    "Nice" (muahaha)

  5. Hi XQ,

Sorry to bug you for a little while until I say the actual things I feel. About your blog post, it is according to 7C style of writing and very good to see without any errors and being concise. Thanks for such a post.

Now here is the main thing. I totally agree with you man to learn so many things from this module. I like your positive attitude to correct yourself whenever pointed out, and it should be with everyone. After all we all learn from our mistakes. From my point of view, you are very good in speaking and expressing your point and i mean it. Skills learnt from all of this has really made you better and better. And this is applicable to all of us.

Thanks for such a nice blog post. Best of luck with your exams. Cheers!!!

  6. Oh dear! I hope you didn't infer your directness from my comments! :/

"I really value your forthright nature and critical insights in analyzing data." HAHAA. Afraid that you may be mistaken and because of the nuances of this particular word, I would like to clarify that 'critical' here is not about criticizing, but your careful judgement and evaluation for our project. If not, we wouldn't be able to formulate such an awesome strategy of the 3-UPs!:)

Yeah. I am forced to use awesome here. Your group mission statement has been accomplished!:)

  7. Hi Eng(ineer)!

Love this name, ENG! You are a group of awesome engineers!

I found your comment on Yan Ling's patience very interesting. It makes me think of the dynamics in a team. I believe her patience and your directness sort of glued the team together to accomplish your goals.

By the way, the catchy phrase "3-ups" is a brilliant idea. Short, sharp and sweet! You guys could be a marketing guru in the future!

Really hope that your proposal could be approved. Then we would not be suffering so much in lessons...:P

All the best! Will see you in school!

  8. Hey there, I'm here again! Like what May said, it's great that you come to terms with your weaknesses and try hard to improve them! I believe that all of us have definitely benefited from this module in one way or another!

"No man is an island" How very true! Indeed, what makes this module different from the rest is probably its high interaction level. I especially enjoy listening to everyone sharing their views on topics and to top it off, Brad's interesting stories. We really learn from one another, which is what keeps this class going.

It's been great knowing you, Xing Quan! See you around, yes? Keep in contact and all the best for finals! (:

  9. Hi fellow meridian,

"Brad was not amused."- I seriously think your post is funny! I was laughing to myself as I read. Or maybe it's just me huh!

What I remembered most while working with you, was our mock interviews. I swear it was epic! (I don't see how your interest in photography is related to my company in any sense.) LOL.

Anyway, a detailed post of yours. You narrowed down to three main points to talk about. And I particularly liked the way you described the importance of interaction. To me, we can only improve through interaction. Because it is only then that we can learn from one another and also a chance to work and make corrections.

Thanks Xq for being part of the class. Will you be my photographer on my wedding day? Haha. Good luck for your exams!

    Alvin

  10. Thanks, Xing Quan, for this detailed review of your learning in ES2007S. I appreciate the way you organize your thoughts, illustrate those with specific details and stories, and offer insights. Very fine job!

I appreciate the fact that, though you found the work overwhelming, you persevered and can now smile upon reflection.

Best of luck for the future!

  12. Hi Xi Xi,

The three ups are a result of my dream. I woke up one day during the course of writing the proposal and it got into my head. Talking about strike by an idea.

Tks for your kind comments so far :)

  13. Hey Alicia,

Yeah the interaction in class made it less boring as compared to the other lectures and tuitorial.I enjoy my interaction with you as well. You never fail to bring life to the class: )

    See you around: )

  14. Yo fellow Meridian,

Haha I never meant for the post to be funny at all but glad that it brought you laughter: )

Practise makes perfect. The more we interact with others, the better we will get. But of course you have to self evaluate from time to time, all else you will be making the mistakes over and over again. I hope we will bring these beyond the classroom into our everyday life.

I will always remember the epic interview that we had. Haha it will stick with me for sometime and I hope I won't be reminded during my next interview. If not, it will be disastrous, haha: )

Sure I can take your wedding photos, but I am not that good lah...

  15. Brad,

Your constant feedback and comments allowed me to constantly improve myself. I always look forward to your comments as I know that there will always be somethiing I can learn from.

You always brought yourself close enough to our level allowing better interaction while keeping yourself a distant to ensure that things get done. Not a lot of people can do that and you did a great job.

Tks so much for everything again: )

  16. Hi Xing Quan,

Spelling errors in your post aside, your reflection on patience made me think about one of my own conflicts. It got me and her (not girlfriend) to a point where we stopped talking to each other. The cold war has been going on for almost a year now.

I thought of being patient with her, but I feared she would take advantage of it. This was something I wanted to avoid. This is the reason I would think about the benefits of patience.

  17. Hi Xing Quan,

This post is very organized and you have emphasized the most important aspects in this course. Looking at other classmates’ reflections, I am glad all of us have gained a lot from this module. Although the workload is heavy, the more effort you put in, the more you will gain out of it. Our effort will not be wasted and all the skills we have acquired will definitely be useful in the future.
